Na spletni strani prikupne britanske predsolske serije Boblins, ki je bila odkupljena tudi za Slovenijo, sem nasel zanimiv odgovor na klasicno vprasanje ali ni slabo za otroke, ce gledajo prevec televizije?
Isn't it bad for my children to watch too much TV?
The dangers
Children need to experience a varied and balanced range of opportunities to have fun, explore, experiment, interact with adults and other children, make discoveries, think, use their bodies and all of their senses in order to develop emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually. To do this they need a range of tools provided by parents, carers and early years settings - books, toys, outside playthings, dressing up clothes, water, sand, games etc. Television is perhaps best viewed as one more such tool, and one that can offer many benefits for children when planned and used appropriately.
When children are left watching ‘the box’ with little guidance or adult input, there are well documented disadvantages to children’s development, and it is these that are often the concern of the press and educationalists. When indiscriminate or excessive viewing is the norm for children, the dangers are four-fold:
* children may watch material that is inappropriate for their age and understanding
* children miss out on other, more active and interactive opportunities for development, and do not therefore experience the varied and balanced diet of opportunities they need to grow and learn
* children can become ‘passive learners’ and lack the opportunities to choose how to direct their attention and to concentrate without constant external stimulation
* when watching alone, children do not have the opportunity to ask questions or use language to clarify and explore their ideas – they can be left confused or frightened, and may develop mistaken ideas which impact negatively on their learning.
The benefits
When used appropriately, television programmes can offer a whole range of benefits that harness the motivational power of children’s enjoyment to support and extend their learning and development. For example,
* watching programmes together offers an opportunity for the bond and attachment between parents and carers to be reinforced through the shared experience
* children can experience a wider range of experiences than may be available to them otherwise
* the characters and stories can provide inspiration for imaginative and creative play
* the characters and story-lines can provide natural opportunities to develop children’s vocabulary and language skills
* the characters, events and stories often motivate children to talk about their own likes and dislikes, preferences and understandings of the world and support their developing identify and self-awareness
* programmes provide many opportunities for children and adults to talk about a range of topics, such as a character’s feelings, behaviour, why things happen, alternative ways of doing things, and to discuss different viewpoints.
